Navdanya, which means nine seeds as well as new gift, is a freedom movement born of a vision of Earth Democracy in which every species and person have a future, every farm and all food are free of toxins, and no one goes hungry. Navdanya has been promoting the conservation of local seed, (including ecologically appropriate seeds such as drought, flood and saline resistant paddy), Propagating ecological organic farming and ecological artisanal food processing.
We also support farmers’ right, fight unfair acts such as the seed Act and unsustainable agriculture practices such the introduction of genetically modified organisms (LIKE Bt. Brinjal and Bt. Cotton) ; we have also opposed biopiracy of our natural genetics resources and won landmark victories against the patenting of Neem, Basmati, Naphal wheat, etc. Through our campaigns, we work to protect the earth, our biodiversity and farmers. We highlighted the exploitation driving cotton farmers to suicide and through this publication we aim to make the public and policy makers to suicide aware of the high cost of industrial sugar and the benefits to our health and our farmers of artisanal sugarcane products such as gur.
Through its seed to table movement, Navdanya directly links farmers, the producers of food, to consumers the coproduces of agriculture. Our pioneering fair-trade initiatives ensure equity for the farmers and the consumers by making a diverse, nutritious, organic and natural food basket available on the shelves of our clients.
